The non-profit Coalfield Water Development Fund’s (CWDF) Board manages two drinking water endowments that have supported $11.5 million in grants for drinking water expansion in the Counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell and the City of Norton.
A few years ago, the CWDF Board began considering how other endowments might be created to similarly benefit the region in perpetuity. They discussed – how could a community foundation be created and sustained to manage endowments and other gifts – large and small for many causes – in this region? Could the CWDF endowments play a role in helping a new community foundation become sustainable more quickly?
Visionary leaders know that meeting resource needs of the future requires planning today and wisely managing the resources you already have.
It was for that reason that the CWDF Board supported the start-up of the Foundation for Appalachian Virginia (FAV) and plans to use it to administer the CWDF water endowments in the future. This arrangement will meet the CWDF endowment management needs and also aid the start-up of a new community foundation to serve donors and community causes in the Counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell, Washington, and the Cities of Norton and Bristol. Regional donors will no longer need to go outside of the region to make gifts to a community foundation. The Foundation for Appalachian Virginia is governed and managed by regional leaders who are familiar with non-profit organizations operating in the region and have served in leadership roles with a variety of community causes.
